Maple 11 on linux so far has been fantastic, but there's a problem with printing. I use cups, and every other application brings up its printing information just fine. When I try to print in Maple, it gives me an error that says "No print service found". Does anyone know how to deal with this?
Is cupsd running?
Hello!
I'm using Maple 11 on linux with cups, too.
I tried to print two pages and it worked perfectly, then I killed cupsd and I tried again, but this time I saw your error message, so I suppose that your printing server (cupsd) is not running...
Yes it is
I even restarted the cupsd, and it still gives me that error. I should mention I have the student version, but I can't imagine that would behave any differently. Firefox finds the printer service just fine. Do you have lpr set up in addition, or are you only using cups? (Someone suggested that perhaps Maple doesn't behave with cups, and I need lprd running)
Maple 9 should have worked with cups
http://www.maplesoft.com/support/faqs/Maple9/Installation/2.aspx
this link suggests to me that maple should work fine with cups. Is there something I need to do in the Maple configuration that I'm not aware of?
Also, looking in my ~/maple/11/maplerc, I see the following section of code:
[Printer]
ImageableY=54.0
PlotPrintQuality=0
PaperWidth=612.0
PaperHeight=792.0
ImageableX=54.0
ImageableHeight=684.0
Name=
ImageableWidth=504.0
Orientation=portrait
the fact that there's nothing in Name bothers me a bit. What does yours look like?
It is simply the following...
Here is my printer section of ~/maple/11/maplerc...
[Printer]
PlotPrintQuality=0
Name=
I'm running cupsd 1.1.23 + gimp-print 4.2.7 on Slackware 11.
I configured cupsd, but I didn't anything to configure Maple to use the printer, it worked "out of the box"...
I don't have gimp-print
I don't have gimp-print installed, maybe I'll try putting that on. If that doesn't work, could you post or email me your cups configuration so I can compare? Thanks for the help!
Update
I still can't get printing to work, and it's really frustrating. I've tried downgrading to the version of cups mentioned, with no change. gimp-print appears to just be nicer printer drivers than what comes with cups, so that doesn't help either. I have yet to hear back from Maplesoft support. I have no clue what else would need to be changed to get maple talking to cups, but I need an answer soon. Doesn't do me much good if I can't turn in my homework. =)
Config files
I put on my tiny web space my config files:
client.conf
cupsd.conf
printers.conf
I don't know if they may be useful to you...
Thank you!!
That worked--I used your cupsd.conf and restarted the daemon, and Maple now recognizes the printers. Now I just need to figure out what the difference is between yours and mine so I can correct it. I'll be sure to post what makes the difference here for future reference for anyone else who runs into this problem. Thanks for the help!
The problem has been found:
The problem has been found: I had the following lines:
Listen localhost:631 (Equivalent to your Port 631 line as near as I can tell)
Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock
The second line was messing everything up. Commenting it out fixed the problem. Now I get to wonder what it was for in the first place...
If you had upgraded to CUPS 1.2.x
If you had upgraded to CUPS 1.2.x, then this might be the problem that you were experiencing (http://www.cups.org/articles.php?L433+I0+TFAQ+P1+Q).

Yes it is. In fact I just found that article, and came here to post a link for reference. Thanks!
printer problems
Hello everybody,
me as well I was sharing your printing problems with maple 11. Just as little feedback...
don't forget to create the symlink:
/usr/lib# ln -s libcups.so.2 libcups.soas suggested by the article posted by scott03. It was the only hint that worked for me.
I'm running on debian etch 4.0 kernel 2.6.18 arch=amd64
with cupsys 1.2.7-4 installed
thanks a lot and have a nice weekend
mrElectronic
I have the same problem and
I have the same problem and the libcups symlink mentioned in one post is present. I followed the advice to make a client.conf file and put in the ServerName as localhost but that did not work, though I am no longer getting the error I was seeing before from Maple about not finding the print service. The printer just doesn't print.
Maple12 comes out soon but I don't expect a fix there since this problem appears to have something to do with JAVA not Maple.
I have the same problem, but
I have the same problem, i.e. "No print service found",
but I have cups 1.3.9ubuntu2 installed and I cannot access to the article http://www.cups.org/articles.php?L433+I0+TFAQ+P1+Q refferenced by Scott03.
I get "Bad option 'P1'!"
What is wrong?
I tried to comment the line
Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock
I changed the
Port 631
into
Listen localhost:631
I have a symlink :
rno@amd-quad:/usr/lib$ ls libcups* -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 423332 2008-11-21 14:02 libcups.a
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 97200 2008-11-21 14:01 libcupsimage.so.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2008-11-23 10:47 libcups.so -> libcups.so.2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 232392 2008-11-21 14:01 libcups.so.2
I still don't know how to print in Maple on linux (kernel 2.6.27-10-generic).
Please help.
jre6 update 11
I've just substituted the jre that comes with maple 11.02 with jre6u11, downloaded from java.sun.com.
(I unpacked the jre and, after making a backup copy of the original files, I put it in the maple11 installation directory, renaming jre1.6.0_11 jre.IBM_INTEL_LINUX).
Now printing seems to work fine...
I'm using Maple 11.02 for linux 32 bit, build 330022, linux kernel 2.6.27.7, glibc 2.7, cups 1.3.8.
Be careful: try this procedure at your own risk!!!
I do not assume any responsibilities whatsoever for any damages!!!

My output of: java -version
java version "1.6.0_11"

Your jre version seems a bit different from mine... (is it a 64 bit version?)
However, I'm not saying that I solved the problem of printing with cpus/linux in Maple 11, I only reported a personal successful try and I cannot even exclude that using a version of the jre different from that bundled (and tested) with Maple 11.02 may cause other serious problems.

java -version
Yes, I am using Linux 64 version of Ubuntu. I have 64bit version of Maple, too.
I was trying with jre from ubuntu package http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/sun-java6-jre and jre from Sun http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jre/install-linux-64.html. In both cases an unexpected error occurs.
64-bit Ubuntu
I've installed Java earlier (a year or so ago) and then updated it regularly using Synaptic Package Manager. After installing Maple 12 recently, I replaced Maple's jre with sun's and it worked OK, see here.
