In 1991-92 I was a visting scholar at UCLA, Los Angeles, following graduate courses in Applied Mathematics. Since 1992 I have been a teacher in a high school (gymnasium) in Denmark. This post is written by a mathematics teacher who usually views Maple’s new initiatives from an educational perspective, and I’m well aware that others may see things differently. A single user might be delighted by a new feature that fits their personal workflow. An advanced user might not care if something requires a workaround.

There are also many preferences when it comes to how the interface should look. I often consider whether something will work well for our high school as a whole. We have students who are not very mathematically or scientifically inclined, and others who are. That’s why user-friendliness is essential. Some packages have been developed to make things easier for students. We try to avoid too many workarounds, since these often create problems for them.

Now, on to Maple 2025’s new interface:

When Microsoft introduced tabs and ribbons instead of menus and toolbars in Word many years ago, I personally thought it was a good idea. I can imagine it working well in Maple too — especially if the different elements are placed logically on the tabs, and frequently used functions are easy to access.

However, I just returned from summer vacation, ready for a new school year, only to discover something surprising: the Windows version comes with the new ribbon interface, while the Mac version still has the old one! For any teacher, this is a nightmare scenario: teaching a class where the Windows and Mac interfaces look completely different. Has Maplesoft ended up caught between two chairs here?

I’ve heard that a Mac version with tabs and ribbons is under development. But since it’s not ready yet, we can’t use it. On Windows, I also noticed a strange extra application called “Maple 2025 Screen Readers”. If you open it directly, you get an odd mix of modern 2D notation and old 1D Maple notation, which is simply unacceptable. If you instead click “Screen Reader Mode” in the top-right corner, it looks more normal. But does that mean it’s fully functional? If so, we might be able to combine this with the Mac version that still uses the old interface — and then switch next year to both Windows and Mac with tabs and ribbons. Still, I must say that Maplesoft is providing far too little information on this! Around 75% of our students use Macs, while only 25% use Windows.

Another issue: When saving a Maple file on a Windows computer, you’re forced into Maple’s own “Save As” window. I’ve previously suggested that it should instead open directly in Windows’ native File Explorer, which is far more powerful. In File Explorer, you can quickly use Quick Access shortcuts to save the file in the right folder. In Maple’s “Save As” window, however, it often takes 6–7 extra clicks to reach the desired location. For students who aren’t very tech-savvy, navigating through a deep folder tree can be a real challenge. Why doesn’t Maplesoft just use Windows’ own File Explorer, which students are already familiar with? Most other programs do. Perhaps someone can explain why Maplesoft insists on keeping their own limited “Save As” dialog.

Finally: I do believe that tabs and ribbons can be a good solution, but there’s still work to be done in placing items on appropriate tabs. For example, although I personally use the F5 keyboard shortcut to switch between Text, Non-executable Math, and Math mode, I know many students prefer to click on these options in Maple 2024. In the new interface, it now takes two or three clicks to do so. Since this is a function used very frequently, that’s a drawback. Couldn’t users be allowed to customize the Quick Access toolbar — via the Options menu — so these items can be placed there if needed?

 

 

I am a high school Teacher in Denmark, who have been using Maple since version 12, more than 12 years ago. I suggested it for my school back then and our math faculty finally decided to purchase a school license. We are still there. We have watched Maple improve in a lot of areas (function definitions, context panels, graphically etc., etc ). Often small changes makes a big difference! We have been deligted. We we are mostly interested in improvements in GUI and lower level math, and in animations and quizzes. I have also been enrolled as a beta tester for several years yet. 

One of the areas, which is particually important is print and export to pdf, because Danish students have to turn in their papers/solutions at exams in pdf format! I guess the Scandinavian countries are ahead in this department. They may quite possible be behind in other areas however, but this is how it is. 

Now my point: Maplesoft is lacking terrible behind when regarding screen look in comparison with print/export to pdf. 

I am very frustrated, because I have been pinpointing this problem in several versions of Maple, both on Mapleprimes and in the beta groups. Some time you have corrected it, but it has always been bouncing back again and again! I have come to the opinion that you are not taking it seriously? Why?

Students may loose grades because of missing documentations (marking on graphs etc.). 

I will be reporting yet another instance of this same problem. When will it stop?

In the recent years much software has undergone a change towards allowing for better sharing of documents. As is the case with other software as well, the users are no longer mainly single persons sitting in a dark corner doing their own stuff. Luckily Maplesoft has taken an important step in that direction too by introducing MapleCloud some years ago. This means that it is now possible quite easily to discuss calculations done in Maple in the classroom. One student uploads and the Teacher can find the document seconds later on his own computer connected to a Projector and show the student's solutions for the other  students in the classroom. That's indeed great! Maple is however lacking in one important aspect: It's Graphics User Interface (GUI) is not completely ready to for that challenge! I noticed that quite recently when the entire teaching staff received new netbooks: 14 inch Lenovo Yoga X1 with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. From factory defaults text zoom was set to 200%. Without it, text would be too small in all applications used on the computer. The Microsoft Office package and most other software has adapted to this new situation dealing with high variation in the users screen resolutions, but not Maplesoft:

  1. Plots and Images inserted become very small
  2. Open File dialogs and the like contain shortened text for folder names ... (you actually have to guess what the folders are)
  3. Help menus are cluttered up and difficult to read.

I show screen images of all three types below.

I know it is possible to make plots larger by using the option size, but since it relies on pixels it doesn't work when documents are shared between students and teachers. You cannot expect the receiving student/teacher to make a lot of changes in the document just to be able to read it. It will completely destroy the workflow!

Why doesn't Maplesoft allow for letting documents display proportionally on the users computer like so many other programs do? Why do it need to be in pixels? If it is possible to make it proportional, it would also solve another issue: Making prints (to a printer or to pdf) look more like they do on the screen than is the case at present.

I really hope Maplesoft will address this GUI challenge, because I am sure the issue will pile up quite rapidly. Due to higher costs, most laptops/netbooks among students don't have that high resolution compared to computer dimensions at the moment, but we already have received a few remarks from students owning such computers. Very soon those highend solution computers will dive into the consumer market and become very common.

I have mentioned this important GUI issue in the beta-testing group, but I don't think those groups really are adapted to discussions, more bug fixes. Therefore I have made this Post in the hope that some Maple users and some chief developers will comment on it!
     

Now I have criticized the Maple GUI, I also feel urged to tell in what departments I think Maple really excels:

  1. The Document-structure is great. One can produce good looking documents containing 'written math' (inactive math) and/or 'calculated math'. All-in-one! Other competting software does need one to handle things separatly.
  2. Sections and subsections. We have actually started using Maple to create documents containing entire chapters or surveys of mathematics or physics subjects, helping students to get a better overview. I am pretty sure the Workbook tool also will help here.
  3. Calculations are all connected. One can recalculate the document or parts of it, eventually using new parameters. Using Maple for performing matematical experiments. Mathematical experiments is a method entering more into the different mathematics curriculums.
  4. MapleCloud. Easy sharing of documents among students and teachers.
  5. Interactive possibilities through the Explore command and other commands. Math Apps as well.
  6. Besides that mathematical symbols can be accessed from the keyboard, they can also be accessed from palettes by less experinced users.  
  7. Good choice by Maple to let the user globally decide the size text and math is displayed in Maple - set globally in the menu Tools < Options.
  8. Maple can handle units in Physics
  9. Maple has World-Class capabilities. If you have a mathematical problem, Maple can probably handle it. You just need to figure out how.

I am pretty new to programming in Maple and trying to learn the language. One thing I needed was how to handle lists in a specific way. I have used many hours on this issue now and even asked questions in the Questions section. Other users helped me with clever tricks and I am grateful for that. Dear Maple Users

I am mainly in favor of the new rules concerning subscripts. Using Ctrl+-- (double underscore) it is pretty straight forward to get a literal subscript and it displays much better in the palette Variables than was the case i Maple 16. Also the purple coloring of a variable containing a literal subscript makes sense, because it can be distinguished from the usual subscript (now Ctrl+shift+-). Good that you can remove the coloring in the View Menu (Atomic Variables...
