This is going in the right direction but I've got a couple questions.

1.  What is a "naked differential"?

2.  Why are you guys defining a function called "deq"?  Why not handle the the equation as itself using labels, palletes, and context menus?

3.  Why do your posts look like that?  Is it because they are in 1-D and Worksheet Mode?  Can't I use 2-D, palletes, context menus, Document Mode, etc?  I tried to copy n paste then execute them but nothing happened.

That did the trick but that leaves two questions: 1. What caused the math input problem to begin with? It looks exactly like what I typed in a second time. Is this a bug? 2. Why didn't it put it into the simplest form to begin with? That is, why does (5) look the way it does forcing me to use "simplify"? Thanks again!

Are you sure you haven't got the two reversed? If I go File>New>Worksheet Mode I get a bracket and a prompt. But if I go File>New>Document Mode I get no brackets and no prompts until I go Tools>Load Package>Units and then I have the problem. As for putting the the wrong line into the eval statement all I can say is Duh'O!!

Axel, That works but the result is the fraction dp/dy instead of the derivative dp/dy. I can't apply a differential solver to it. (????) J. Tarr, Yours works but isn't there a simpler way? Does Maple not have a way of dealing with individual differentials rather than with whole derivatives, i.e. dp and dy versus the derivative dp/dy? Thanks!!!!

Bummer. A disturbing lack of skill and guile is what lead me to buy Maple in the first place. Simplify with side relations, eval, applyrule, algsubs, subs - five different ways to do what I should just do by myself. My limited exposure to these kinds of applications (Derive, Maple, et al) has lead me to suspect that using them requires that you constantly ask yourself at every step of the problem - who can do it better - me or the machine. Any thoughts? Many thanks to all.

Why this requirement for "monomials in a to divide monomials in f"? What the heck does that mean, anyway? What's a "monomial"? Do they mean "a single term in polynomial"? And what do they mean one monomial can divide another? ANY term can be made to divide another just by putting one over the other with a "/" in between. Why so complicated. I'm just trying to do this:

Okay, here's my problem. I have something real simple like

and I want to make the following substitution:

which if I did by myself would come out

But how do I make Maple do this? subs, algsubs and eval all fail.

Okay, algsubs can be made to do this but because of the "dividing monomials" thing it has to be in the form

Or some such which is so ugly that I couldn't even figure out how to do. As demonstrated above.

What I'm trying to make Maple do is one of the simplest moves in algebra. Is there some command I'm missing?

Can't help it. I'm allergic to commands. I did your example and read ?algsubs and ?eval. But I can't understand why in F2 (algsubs) x^1/3 did not get put in for ALL the "u"s THANKS!

The problem is how g and h come out here. They're both "x squared" but differentiating them and feeding them "2" gives different results and I don't understand why. Thanks for the reply!

Found it! The command is "identify". Type in identify(.3333) and 1/3 pops out. Identify (3.1416) will give you pi. Not quite what I actually SAID I was looking for.....
