Dr. Scot Gould is a professor of physics at Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges - members of The Claremont Colleges in California. He was involved in the early development of the atomic force microscope. His research has included numerous studies and experiments using scanning probe microscopes, particularly those involving natural fibers such as spider silk. More recently, he was involved in developing and sustaining AISS. This full-year multi-unit, non-traditional, interdisciplinary undergraduate science education course integrated topics from biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science. His current interest is integrating computational topics into the physics curriculum. He teaches the use of Maple's computer algebraic and numerical systems to assist students in modeling and visualizing physical and biological systems. His Dirac-notation-based quantum mechanics course is taught solely through Maple.

@dharr I saw that procedure name, but I assumed that was a typo by the OP.

@C_R I wondered what was going on. I agree. There is certainly a huge advantage to using a multiplatform system.

Add another data point of where the content of the Maple interface disappears: Windows 11 laptop: Intel Iris Xe Graphics.

Works properly for me in 2023 and 2024. I am not using the Physics package.

@mmcdara Thanks for taking the time to write this all out. Rest assured, with my lack of experience in probability and the Statistics package, this output would have required days of research and much failure.

The code comes from a Wikipedia article on Monte Carlo integration.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Carlo_integration

I wondered if the sampling technique provided was going to be more useful than the crude method as a demonstration of a single-variable example of Monte Carlo integration.  Of course, Maple and Mathematica can quickly integrate the function.

int(1/(1+sinh(2*x)*ln(x)^2), x = .8 .. 3) = .6768400757NULL

NULL

Could you recommend a book, website, etc., that would help me get up to speed with probability distributions?

@jganding LOL! I hadn't thought of using the MmaTranslator line-by-line. Instead, I used the MapleApp, and it puked at the 2nd line. Thanks.

@C_R Thanks!  Well, for this 10-year-old laptop I'm working on, the display adapter is Intel(R) HD Graphics 620.   For the 5-year-old workstation, the adapter is an NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000. And, LOL, the open Maple worksheet was completely blank of any features.

Again, I've seen this effect on all my Windows-based machines for quite a while. It is a bit embarrassing when I'm making a presentation in front of the students.

The other pain that I've complained about is, if a Maple session is open for some time, with the machine put in sleep mode and then awakened, the sub-menus from the top menu bar do not open. Again, the java interface is the reason, that I'm told.

@C_R I receive a new version of Maple annually. Hence, I have all versions for several years, though, on my computers, I tend to keep versions from only the past 3 years. Sorry, I am not familiar with the type of video cards that are on the computers. However, I observe the effect on my Windows workstation and multiple laptops.

Maybe the simplest answer is to turn off the Wifi, or whatever the students are using on a computer to access the internet.

I suffer from this problem quite a bit. Other than using the mouse technique or restarting Maple, there appears to be no other solution. There is no official Maplesoft solution. They are aware of the problem, which has been in existence for quite a while. At a Maplesoft conference, some of the coders/developers were asked about the problem. As far as I remember, the answer was that it was a consequence of how the Java API interacts with Windows.

When asked what people would like to develop if they had time and money, one of the first answers was the interface. Maybe we will see a non-java-based interface in the solutions.

@Ronan LOL! My bad. Now that I read it as a list, I understand your post better.

@acer, the procedure simplify does not produce the clean solution for R2 as you obtained through evala. My question is, why shouldn't it if I tell it all constants are positive?

@PerKirkegaard64 . You are not alone in this question.  See this very recent question to MaplePrimes.

https://www.mapleprimes.com/questions/238173-Disable-Maple-AI-Formula-Assistant

I have given up on allowing the use of any electronic device (no phones, no calculators, etc.) on half of my exams. I ask the students questions about concepts and approaches. For the other exams, I leave it as open book, open note, and open internet. I select problems that they cannot find a solution for on the internet, or if they ask an AI generative system, it returns the wrong result.  This leads to a different set of educational experiences.  This approach may not work for you, but it may for others.

@jrive, one of the major typos I see with folks using Maple is a result of their zoom factor being too small. I write at a zoom factor of at least 150% (ctrl-5 or command-5). Hence, I've made the same typo as you have, but when the input is larger, it is easier to catch.  Just a suggestion.

@Ronan, I was referring more to the spacing and potentially missing sentences in this post. It read like a poem. Was that intentional?

In your last question, letters for words and even entire words were missing.  Well, as long as others understand what you are asking, I'll not interfere. But if they don't answer properly, that may be part of the issue.

@Ronan, your posting is virtually unreadable. I assumed it was a one-off, but your latest question about returning only a select number of terms showed similar problems. Characters, or entire words, are missing. Since I suspect you can speak the King's English far more goodly than I, it has to be some odd connection problem. Yes? Is it something within MaplePrimes? See the image of what you wrote on this question.
